Making things nobody is waiting for

Tuesday, June 30, 2026

Here's an odd feeling I wasn't ready for: we're making something that, right now, precisely nobody is waiting for.
There's no inbox full of "when's it out?" There's no community refreshing a page. The analytics on this very diary are, let's say, intimate — I could probably name most of the people who've read this far, and I'd have fingers left over. And that's completely normal for a studio our age. But normal and easy aren't the same thing.
Because the thing about working in obscurity is that the motivation has to come from somewhere other than applause. When you're big, there's a crowd pulling the work forward — expectations, momentum, people genuinely excited. When you're brand new, there's just you and the work and a very quiet room. No one's clapping. No one's booing either. It's not failure. It's just silence, and silence is a strange thing to push against.
I caught myself this week wanting some external sign that this matters. A number going up. A stranger saying something nice. Anything that confirmed the thing in my head also exists for other people. And it doesn't, yet. It can't, yet. We haven't given anyone enough to care about. That's the deal we signed up for.
What's been steadying me is a reframe I keep having to repeat to myself: the quiet is a gift, actually. Nobody's watching means nobody's watching when we get it wrong. We can be bad at things in private. We can take the strange swing, follow the odd instinct, spend a week on something that might not work — and there's no audience to disappoint if it doesn't. The obscurity that feels lonely on a Tuesday is the same obscurity that lets us be brave on a Wednesday.
And the honest motivation, when I dig for it, was never really the crowd anyway. It's smaller and more stubborn than that. It's wanting to see if the thing in our heads can survive contact with reality. It's the ninety seconds we saw a stranger forget we were in the room. It's the work itself being good company, most days.
So we keep going into the quiet. We make the thing nobody's asked for, trusting that the asking comes later — that you don't get a crowd and then build the thing, you build the thing and maybe, slowly, the crowd shows up. We're planting in winter. No shame in an empty field this early.
If you're reading this in the quiet with us — genuinely, thank you. You're early. That counts for a lot around here.
