The boring forms that make it real

Tuesday, June 16, 2026

I spent most of yesterday filling in forms, and weirdly, it might have been one of the more important days we've had.
Not glamorous. There's no screenshot to share, no clip, nothing that looks like progress. Just a stack of fields asking for legal entity names and bank details and tax identifiers, and a couple of agreements long enough that reading them properly cost an hour I'd budgeted for something else. I kept waiting for the part where it felt like making a game. It never came. It felt like setting up a small business, because that's exactly what it was.
Here's the thing I didn't expect, though. About halfway through one of these forms, it hit me that we were filling it in as a real company, with a real name, doing a real thing. A year ago this was a notebook. Now an actual institution somewhere wants to know who we are for their records. That's a strange and quietly enormous feeling — the studio existing in someone else's system, not just in our heads.
The hard part of this stuff, for people like us, is that none of us came from the business side. We're makers. Reading a contract clause and genuinely understanding what we're agreeing to — not skimming, not vibing it, actually understanding — is a muscle we're building from scratch. I've learned to slow down on the sentences I'd normally skip. The boring sentences are usually the ones that matter most later.
We've started a simple rule: nobody signs anything alone. Two sets of eyes minimum, even when one set is tired and the clause is dull and we're sure it's fine. Most of the time it is fine. But "most of the time" is exactly the gap where small studios get bitten, and we'd rather spend the extra twenty minutes now than discover the problem in a year.
So no, there's nothing to show today. The work was invisible. But the scaffolding around a game matters as much as the game some days — you just don't notice it until it's missing.
Tomorrow, back to the fun part. Hopefully. Assuming no more forms appear.
