The studio with no walls

Tuesday, August 4, 2026

Someone asked me this week where the studio is, and I fumbled the answer for a solid few seconds.
Because the honest reply is: it's a kitchen table. It's a spare bedroom with a desk that's too small. It's a corner of a flat where the good light lasts until about two. It's a group call and a shared drive and a channel that never really goes quiet. Pixel Sprout has a name, a logo, a bank account that takes us very seriously — and no walls at all. There is no room you could point to and say "that's the studio."
For a while that embarrassed me a little. The word "studio" conjures a place. Desks in a row, a couch nobody cleans, a wall of sticky notes, someone's dog. We have none of it. When you tell people you run a game studio and then admit it's mostly you at a table that's also where you eat dinner, there's a tiny flicker where you brace for them to think it's not real.
But I've been turning it over, and I don't think the walls are the thing. The thing is the shared head. The studio isn't a place — it's the overlap between a few people who've decided to point in the same direction. That travels. It's in the flat, on the call, in the drive, in the fact that any one of us can pick up a thread another dropped and know exactly where it was going.
There are real costs, I won't pretend otherwise. You lose the accidental stuff — the overheard comment that solves a problem, the quick "come look at this" that would've taken ten messages to arrange. We've had to manufacture the accidents now: a standing call that exists purely so we bump into each other, a habit of narrating small things out loud that a shared room would've carried for free. It's not the same. Some days I miss a door I can close and a colleague I can turn to without dialling anything.
And yet. There's something right about the studio living in our heads for now, at this size. It's honest to what we are — a handful of people and an idea, not a building and a lease. The walls can come later, if they ever need to. You don't start a thing by renting a room. You start it by agreeing to care about the same thing, and we've got that part covered.
So: no address to give you yet. Just a table, some light till two, and a channel that won't shut up.
That'll do for now.
