The Steam page has a box for a short description. It's a few lines at most, and it has been the hardest writing I've done all year.
For months we've been able to explain our first game for as long as someone would listen, usually with hand gestures. Now I have to fit it into the space of a text message, for a stranger who is skimming, on a page full of other people's games, and who will decide in about two seconds whether to keep reading.
My first draft was a paragraph. My second was a slightly shorter paragraph. My third was a list of adjectives, which I deleted immediately because every game on earth is "thrilling" and "immersive" and I'd be embarrassed to be one more.
What helped was a rule we borrowed from the trailer edit: if a line is only there because we're proud of it, it goes. The question isn't "what's impressive about this?" It's "what does a stranger need to feel in the first five seconds?" Those are very different lists, and it stings a little how often my favourite sentence fails the second one.
The capsule art has the same problem in picture form. It's a tiny image that has to do the job of a whole poster, and half of what looks good large turns to mush at thumbnail size. We've started squinting at everything from across the room, which is the least scientific testing method imaginable and also weirdly effective.
There's a funny emotional layer to it too. Writing the page means deciding, in public, what we think the thing is. Up to now it could be whatever it needed to be in the moment. A store page is a small, firm "this is what we made," and I felt that wobble properly while typing.
We're not publishing anything yet, and we're still being careful about what stays under wraps. But the draft exists now, in a doc, and it's short. Mostly I've learned that cutting words is a skill I didn't know I lacked.
Next job: show it to someone who's never heard of us and watch their face while they read it. Wish me luck. I'll try not to explain over the top of them.
